The German folk-horror series Ritus has made its debut, screening its opening episodes at the 43rd Munich International Film Festival. Directed by Jonathan B. Behr, the six-episode production centers on the town of Seelenried—the “Marsh of Souls”—where a terrifying cycle of disappearances repeats every 18 years.
An Investigation Defying Time
The mystery ignites with the discovery of a young girl’s body. Despite being missing for 18 years, the remains show no signs of aging. Inspector André Berger, played by Moritz Bleibtreu, takes the lead on the case. For Berger, the stakes are personal: his first wife vanished during the last lunistice.
As the investigation deepens, Berger crosses paths with Selin, portrayed by Anna Shirin Habedank. A girl from a different town, she is plagued by eerie visions. Together, they confront ancient legends tied to the lunar shift and the lake, forces that threaten to tear open the town’s long-buried secrets.
Crafting the Atmosphere
Commissioned by ARD Degeto and Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), the project was produced by MadeFor Film GmbH. The creative team, led by creators Viola M. J. Schmidt and Maximilian Baumgartner, prioritized atmospheric tension over conventional exposition. Director Jonathan B. Behr, a graduate of the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, worked with composer Peter Albrecht and sound designer Robin Harff to build a grim, grounded tone.
Critics have noted that the series avoids “unwarranted information dumps,” opting instead to let the audience piece together the mystery alongside the protagonists.
Streaming Strategy for a High-Stakes Thriller
The series was showcased in the “New German Television Production” lineup at the Munich International Film Festival, which runs until July 5. While the festival provided a big-screen premiere, the show’s primary home will be the ARD media library.
The decision to bypass a primetime linear television slot in favor of the digital platform has drawn attention, particularly given the show’s high production value and cast. The ensemble includes Alma Hasun as Liv, the pregnant wife of Inspector Berger, and Till Raskopf as the missing youth, Sandro. Audiences can expect the series to arrive on the ARD media library in the autumn.
