Unprecedented Heat Wave Shatters Records Across the Western U.S.
An exceptionally strong heat wave is currently breaking records across the western United States, with temperatures soaring to levels rarely seen even in summer. The event is described as “one of the more meteorologically exceptional events” in recent years, raising concerns about health risks and potential for wildfires.
Record-Breaking Temperatures
On Friday, March 20, 2026, four stations – two in Arizona and two in California – recorded temperatures of 112 degrees Fahrenheit (44.4 degrees Celsius), surpassing the all-time U.S. March record. This temperature is just one degree Fahrenheit (0.56 degrees Celsius) below the all-time April U.S. Record. As of March 21, 2026, eight states have established new all-time high temperature records for March during this heat wave.
North Shore, California, reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius) on Wednesday, matching the state’s hottest March temperature on record. Phoenix, Arizona, hit 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) on Thursday, the earliest such recording by more than a month. Just outside Martinez Lake, Arizona, the temperature climbed to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) on Thursday, marking the highest March temperature ever recorded in the U.S.
The Meteorological Drivers
The heat wave is being driven by a strong high-pressure area – a ridge – over the Southwest. This ridge is associated with northward humps in the jet stream and covers a vast area of the U.S. The ridge is causing air to subside and compress, warming it, and also creating stable conditions that prevent cloud formation and allow for maximum solar heating.
A “Kona low” that recently drenched Hawaii with record-breaking rain is also contributing. The condensation of water vapor releases latent heat, and an atmospheric river is channeling this moisture and heat towards the Pacific Northwest, potentially reinforcing the ridge and increasing temperatures.
Climate Change Connection
Scientists assert that climate change is a significant factor in this extreme weather event. Research from the World Weather Attribution group indicates that this heat wave would have been “virtually impossible without climate change.” The group’s analysis suggests that such an event has become approximately four times more likely in the past decade due to greenhouse gas emissions and is up to 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Celsius) hotter than it would have been otherwise.
Health and Wildfire Risks
Heat advisories and extreme heat alerts have been issued across many western states, warning of the health risks associated with high temperatures, particularly for vulnerable populations like the very young, the elderly, and outdoor workers. The sudden onset of the heat is a concern, as people haven’t had time to acclimatize to warmer temperatures.
Experts are also worried about the potential for wildfires. Much of the West is experiencing drought conditions, and the snowpack, which typically provides moisture in the spring, is significantly lower than usual. The heat wave is expected to accelerate snowmelt, exacerbating drought conditions and increasing wildfire risk.
