Avalanche Danger Prompts Red Warnings Across Southern Norway
Several regions in southern Norway are under a red avalanche warning as mild weather and fresh snowfall create unstable conditions in the mountains. The warnings impact areas experiencing winter holidays, prompting officials to urge caution and, in some cases, to postpone mountain trips.
Red Warnings Issued for Multiple Regions
The Norwegian Water Resources and Directorate (NVE) has issued red avalanche warnings for several areas, including Hardanger, Voss, Indre Sogn, Jotunheimen, Indre Fjordane, Svartisen, Helgeland, and Svalbard. A red warning signifies a very high avalanche risk, indicating that even small loads can trigger landslides.
Unstable Snowpack Conditions
Svein Ove Seim, head of the district council’s auxiliary corps in Hordaland for the Norwegian Red Cross, explained that recent snowfall is lying on top of snow layers with limited cohesion. “it only takes a small load before a landslide is triggered,” Seim stated in a press release. The mild weather currently moving across Norway is exacerbating the instability.
Red Cross and NGI Recommendations
Jannicke Høyem, head of the avalanche resource group in the Norwegian Red Cross, emphasized the unusual extent of the red warnings. “It is unusual to have a red warning in so many places at the same time. We encourage everyone who is going out on a trip in these areas to avoid any avalanche terrain,” she said. The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) recommends postponing mountain trips until conditions stabilize.
Weather Conditions Contributing to Risk
Meteorologist Charalampos Sarchosidis warned that the transition to plus temperatures, combined with rain on cold ground, is creating slippery conditions and increasing the risk of avalanches. “There are a number of danger warnings that have been issued today, and there could easily be avalanches in several places,” Sarchosidis noted.
Staying Safe During Winter Holidays
Despite the danger warnings, officials encourage people to enjoy the winter holidays responsibly. Key recommendations include:
- Avoiding all avalanche terrain.
- Checking weather and avalanche warnings (Yr and varsom.no) before traveling.
- Choosing safe areas for winter activities.
- Following road announcements regarding closures and traffic jams.
