Redzuan-Isyraf Target Medal at World Juniors in Cairo

Malaysian junior boys’ doubles pair Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal and Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim are targeting a podium finish at the World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt, following their arrival in the host city ahead of the tournament starting on Tuesday.

Cairo Campaign Targets Podium Return

The world No. 3 ranked junior pair left for Cairo early Monday morning alongside 30 players and officials, aiming to restore Malaysia to the boys’ doubles podium after the squad missed out at last year’s edition in Guwahati, India. Malaysia previously won the junior boys’ doubles title in Nanchang, China, through Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing, while Aaron also claimed bronze alongside Bryan Jeremy Goonting at the 2024 tournament in Spokane, Washington, according to thestar.com.my.

Redzuan stated that while the pair holds ambitions of capturing the title, they are intentionally managing their expectations. “We will try our best to win the title and bring home a medal, but we don’t want to think too much about becoming champions because we don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves. For now, our first target is to bring home a medal,” Redzuan said, as reported by thestar.com.my. Isyraf added that the partnership feels physically prepared for the upcoming matches. “I think we are in very good condition and we will do our best at the World Championships,” Isyraf said, according to thestar.com.my.

Coach Assesses Preparations After Partnership Changes

National junior doubles coach Hazwan Jamaluddin expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, noting that recent adjustments to team partnerships have elevated their standard of play above their previous outing. At the Asian Junior Championships in Yatsushiro, Japan, in July, Redzuan and Isyraf entered as the second-seeded pair but suffered a third-round exit, according to thestar.com.my.

“I think our preparations this time have been good and are better than before the Asian Junior Championships because we made several changes to the partnerships,” Hazwan said, as reported by thestar.com.my. The coach also noted that the juniors have spent time training and sparring alongside senior shuttlers to acclimate to higher-intensity competition.

Revised Relay Scoring System Introduces New Pressures

The tournament format presents a distinct strategic challenge during the team event, which utilizes a revised relay scoring system. Team ties will be decided over the best of three sets, with each set played to 55 points, demanding sustained concentration from all competitors.

“One thing we want to see is their mental preparation because with the shorter scoring system, you cannot afford to slow down,” Hazwan said, according to thestar.com.my. “You have to keep pushing, and we want to see whether they can handle the pressure.” Following the conclusion of the team competition, the individual championships are scheduled to run from October 11 to October 17, reverting to the 3×15 scoring system.
