Reims, France – Stéphane Lang, a candidate in the recent municipal elections in Reims, is exploring a potential alliance with Anne-Sophie Frigout, the candidate representing the Rassemblement National (RN), following his party’s decision not to endorse his candidacy. Lang received 7.68% of the vote, a result he attributes to his personal name recognition, the strength of his list, and the merits of his project.

Disappointment with Les Républicains

Despite campaigning under the banner of Les Républicains (LR), Lang was not granted the party’s official investiture. This decision, made by the LR commission on January 21, 2026, favored incumbent Arnaud Robinet (Horizons), who is seeking a third term as mayor of Reims. Valérie Beauvais, president of the Marne departmental federation of LR, confirmed the party’s support for Robinet, characterizing the decision as a “national” one France3 Regions.

Potential Second-Round Strategy

While the 7.68% result may preclude his team from advancing to the second round, Lang has indicated he will not concede defeat. He is considering approaching another list to secure a position in the runoff election. Frigout, whose RN list is seen as a potential ally, has already reached out to Lang with a proposal to “beat together Arnaud Robinet.”

Frigout Seeks to Bolster Support

Frigout’s interest in an alliance with Lang stems from the potential to leverage his nearly 8% of voters to strengthen her position in the second round. Lang stated he will discuss the proposal with his team after meeting with Frigout L’Union.

Lang’s History with Robinet

Stéphane Lang previously served as an adjoint (deputy mayor) under Arnaud Robinet, having been on Robinet’s list in the previous election. However, the relationship between the two men has deteriorated in recent years, with Lang becoming a vocal critic of the mayor’s policies L’Hebdo du Vendredi.

Lang had previously accused Robinet of falsely claiming to have the support of Les Républicains France Bleu.
