They took courage and challenged Donald Trump on the policy that is dearest to him, that of tariffs, effectively opening the way to a possible front capable of further complicating the Republicans’ mid-term elections.
Thus, ignoring threats and pressure, six conservative MPs, belonging to the more moderate wing of the Grand Old Party, they joined their Democratic colleagues and voted in favor of blocking tariffs on Canadaallowing the House to approve a measure that Speaker Mike Johnson and the president himself had tried so hard to stop.
To the conservative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, the tycoon’s sworn enemy and thorn in his side, have united Don Bacon (elected in Nebraska), Jeff Hurd (in Colorado), Brian Fitzpatrick (in Pennsylvania), And Newhouse (in Washington State) e Kevin Kiley (in California). Many of them voted against tariffs on neighboring Canada to defend the interests of the districts they represent. Others did so because they were faithful to the traditional ideology of the Republican Party which sees free trade as one of the cornerstones and is against ‘taxes’, such as those imposed by tariffs.
Speaker Johnson downplayed the defeat and explained that the president understands why the six ‘rebels’ voted against. Trump, however, does not seem to have appreciated the move of the ‘traitors’ on With his votes against many of the White House’s initiatives, Massie has for months attracted the wrath of the president who does not spare him daily criticism. Having allied himself with the Democrat Rho Khanna for the publication of Jeffrey Epstein’s documents has weakened him even more in the eyes of Trump, for whom he is nothing more than a ‘Rino’, an acronym which stands for ‘Republican in name only’.
