Swearing May Help You Exercise Longer
A swear word can make a difference when you reach your physical limit during exercise. That’s what a new study from researchers at Keele University in the United Kingdom shows. The study was published on December 18th in the journal American Psychologist.
The research suggests swearing doesn’t make you stronger,but it can help you push past mental barriers. Researchers analyzed 300 people and found that swearing increases focus, confidence, and how much you feel involved in the activity.This helps reduce limitations and keeps distracting thoughts at bay.
In experiments, people were able to hold a weight for longer when they repeated a swear word compared to when they said neutral words.After looking at three studies combined, exercise time increased from an average of 25.4 seconds to 28 seconds – a 10% advancement in endurance.

The researchers told the scientific magazine that swearing helps us enter a state where we worry less about what others think. At this point, social rules and self-doubt become less powerful. “In manny situations, people hold themselves back-ofen without realizing it-and don’t use their full potential,” the researchers wrote.
