The race was exceptionally fast, with 12 finishers either matching or surpassing the previous course record. The final moments saw a sprint finish between Don and American Hunter Kemper.

Tim Don edged out Hunter Kemper by just one second, with Kemper finishing in 1:54:24. Australian Courtney Atkinson rounded out the podium, finishing third in 1:54:32.
Kemper, who had finished second in the inaugural event the previous year, acknowledged Don’s strong performance. “Tim ran a great race. I’m happy with how I did, I just got beat by a better guy,” he said.

The JAL International Triathlon Union World Cup in Honolulu offered athletes the opportunity to earn points toward qualification for the World Championships in Japan later in 2005. The first American male and female finishers automatically qualified for the championship event.
