Solar and Battery Storage: A Retiree’s Path to Energy Independence

For many retirees, a modest pension pot might cover a few extra expenses or a small vacation. Still, for Keith Stork, a £8,000 investment became a strategic move to prepay for a decade of energy needs, yielding significant savings. The 76-year-old, along with his wife Elizabeth, installed solar panels and battery storage at their home in Norwich, where they’ve lived for 40 years, aiming for both environmental sustainability and economic benefits.

“I can charge my batteries at 4am, then use that half-price battery power at 7am. Then I’ll charge again at 1pm using my smart tariff rates, which will provide me three more hours to charge at cheap rates. Then I’m not using electricity from the grid at tea time, when it’s at its busiest. It goes on like that, meaning I use half-price electricity every day,” Keith explained.

Financial Benefits and Savings

Between January and December last year, Keith spent approximately £862 on electricity. However, by selling excess electricity back to the grid, he earned £332, reducing his net electricity cost to £530 – an average of £44.17 per month, even with continuous use of his heat pump. He estimates that his savings exceed what he would have received as a weekly pension payout from the initial £8,000 investment.

Expanding the Impact

Impressed with the benefits, Keith has encouraged others to adopt solar energy, even assisting his daughter with the installation of solar panels on her home. He currently generates around 28kWh on a typical summer day, despite his roof’s orientation limiting sunlight exposure until mid-morning.

Solar and Battery Costs and Potential Savings

Octopus Energy estimates that homeowners can reduce their annual electricity bills by around 85% by switching to solar and battery storage, and some may even generate a profit. Savings depend on factors such as roof size, angle, location, electricity consumption patterns, and the chosen tariff.

As of March 6, 2026, an eight-panel installation with a 5kWh smart battery costs approximately £8,518. Octopus Energy offers financing options through partnerships with companies like DivideBuy, providing flexible monthly payment plans.
