Lyric Opera’s “Madama Butterfly” Confronts a Problematic Classic with a Virtual Reality Lens

In David Henry Hwang’s 1988 play “M. Butterfly,” Song Liling challenged the Western romanticization of Puccini’s 1904 opera, “Madama Butterfly,” by reversing the narrative. She questioned the perceived beauty of a tragic Oriental woman sacrificing herself for a Westerner, asking if the same scenario would be considered romantic if the genders were reversed.1 This critique resonates today as opera companies grapple with the problematic elements of “Madama Butterfly,” a beloved perform with an exoticized narrative.
