Revolut Covers Identity Document Costs Following Security Breach
Revolut will pay to replace the identity documents of customers affected by a recent data breach after hackers gained access to an Italian government email address, Reuters reported. Béatrice Cossa-Dumurgier, Revolut’s CEO for Western Europe, confirmed the policy during an interview with BFM TV, stating that the London-based company will cover all associated costs if impacted users need to change their identification papers.
The incident compromises the personal data of 680 clients globally. While the total number spans multiple countries, the figures differ slightly across regional jurisdictions: 55 affected customers reside in France, and 12 are located in Ireland. Revolut has already provided assistance to all 680 individuals.
Government Agency Email Vulnerability Exploited
The security lapse occurred when Revolut transferred customer data in response to an investigative request that originated from an Italian government agency’s email address. Financial institutions are required to supply customer records to authorities when requested during criminal investigations. However, hackers had successfully taken control of the specific account used in the exchange.

Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s interior minister, addressed the breach before lawmakers on September 30. He explained that the message came from the Reggio Calabria police department’s email system, specifically utilizing an address that had never been used previously. Piantedosi asserted that Revolut possessed the means to verify the request and should have performed minimal due diligence before transferring the sensitive files.
Revolut declined to comment on the interior minister’s statements. Cossa-Dumurgier maintained that the company’s own systems remained uncompromised throughout the incident, pointing instead to government agencies as occasionally serving as the “weak link” in official communication channels.
When asked whether the company had yielded to extortion demands, Cossa-Dumurgier stated firmly that Revolut would not pay ransoms to hackers. The digital bank previously reported that it had received no direct ransom demands following the data exposure.
