Nepal in 2024: A Year of Economic challenges and Political Shifts

Table of Contents

2024 presented Nepal with a complex landscape of economic difficulties, political adjustments, and international scrutiny.while the year began with relative calm, it concluded with notable turbulence and uncertainty regarding the nation’s future trajectory.Underlying tensions, coupled with external pressures, shaped a year marked by both setbacks and attempts at reform.

Economic Headwinds and International Scrutiny

A major challenge for Nepal in 2024 was its inclusion on the Financial action Task Force (FATF) gray list in February. This designation stemmed from concerns about Nepal’s inadequate measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. Being on the grey list increased scrutiny of Nepal’s financial system, potentially deterring foreign investment and complicating international transactions. The FATF grey listing signals to global financial institutions that nepal has strategic deficiencies in its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regimes.

Further exacerbating economic pressures was the closure of USAID in Nepal. This resulted in the suspension of numerous critical health, climate, and nutrition projects. USAID’s presence in Nepal was significant, and its withdrawal considerably impacted progress initiatives across the country. The loss of USAID funding and expertise created gaps in essential services and hindered progress on long-term development goals.

Tourism Sector Struggles

Nepal’s tourism sector, a vital contributor to the national economy, continued to face challenges in 2024. While there was some recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector struggled to regain its pre-pandemic levels. Factors contributing to this included global economic slowdowns, increased competition from other tourist destinations, and infrastructure limitations. The Nepal Tourism Board focused on promoting lasting tourism and diversifying tourism offerings to attract a wider range of visitors.

Political Developments and Internal Tensions

The political landscape in Nepal remained dynamic throughout 2024. The ruling coalition experienced internal disagreements and shifting alliances, leading to periods of political instability. These internal conflicts often centered around power-sharing arrangements and policy priorities.

Local elections held in April saw a mix of results, with both established political parties and self-reliant candidates gaining depiction. The increased participation of independent candidates signaled a growing desire for change and a potential shift in the traditional political dynamics. The election Commission of Nepal oversaw the electoral process, ensuring a relatively peaceful and clear election.

Labor Migration and Remittance Flows

Labor migration continued to be a significant feature of the Nepali economy in 2024. Large numbers of Nepalis sought employment opportunities abroad, primarily in the Gulf countries and Malaysia. Remittances sent home by migrant workers remained a crucial source of income for many Nepali families and a major contributor to the national economy. However, concerns persisted regarding the exploitation of migrant workers and the need for better protection mechanisms. The Department of Foreign employment worked to regulate labor migration and ensure the welfare of Nepali workers abroad.

Looking Ahead

Nepal faces considerable challenges as it moves forward.Addressing the issues that led to its inclusion on the FATF grey list, diversifying the economy, and strengthening political stability are crucial priorities. Continued investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare will be essential for sustainable development. Successfully navigating these challenges will require strong leadership, effective governance, and a commitment to inclusive growth. The country’s ability to attract foreign investment and leverage its natural resources will also play a key role in shaping its future.
