RHR: Pioneering the Global Sound of Brazilian Baile Funk
São Paulo-based DJ and producer RHR is rapidly gaining international recognition for his innovative fusion of baile funk with techno, bass, dancehall, and electro. His work transcends genre boundaries, creating a unique sonic landscape rooted in Brazilian sound system culture and a globally curious approach to music production.
From Local Roots to International Stages
Roniere Santos, known as RHR, grew up immersed in a diverse musical environment in the greater São Paulo area. His early exposure to a blend of Brazilian genres – including funk carioca, rap, and emo – provided a foundation for his eclectic style. As he recalls, his mother’s CD compilations from street vendors were his first “purposeful” encounters with music.
RHR’s journey into electronic music began through connections made while playing football. Introduced to lounge and deep house by a friend, he was captivated by the percussive and progressive nature of the sound. This led him to explore club promotion and eventually to DJing, culminating in audio production courses and gigs in the Londrina area.
The ‘GíRIA’ EP and a Skrillex Collaboration
RHR first broke through in 2022 with “Na Captura,” from his Linha de Ofício 93 EP on Tijolo Records. The track’s distinctive “volt-mix” energy quickly garnered attention within the underground electronic music scene.
His latest EP, GíRIA, released on PAN, further solidifies his position as a rising force in global bass music. The title, meaning “slang” in Brazilian Portuguese, reflects RHR’s approach to language and music as forms of cultural expression and subversion. The EP features collaborations with Logan_olm, Me Jesmay, Lucas Swatch, and Big Mammazuki, alongside a highly anticipated track with Skrillex.
A Fusion of Sounds and Influences
GíRIA showcases RHR’s ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical elements. Tracks like “CICLONADA” (featuring Logan_OLM) and “Inna Combination” (with BIGMAMMAZUKI) exemplify his signature style, combining baile funk’s energy with grime, dancehall, and techno influences.
The EP also delves into the history of Brazilian music, with “PULSAÇÃO” referencing the ‘90s montagens (finger-drumming and live-remixing sessions) and “SÓ ENVOLVIDO” showcasing a fusion of rumbling bass and crisp kicks.
While the Skrillex collaboration, “SYRINX,” diverges from the EP’s overall aesthetic, leaning towards 2010s dubstep, the remaining tracks demonstrate RHR’s unique artistic vision and his ability to create a compelling sonic experience.
Upcoming Performances and Continued Momentum
RHR’s momentum continues to build with an upcoming performance closing the mainstage at Dekmantel b2b with Skrillex this summer. He previously performed at BEAM Club in Bangkok on April 19, 2025.
RHR’s work represents a significant contribution to the global electronic music landscape, bringing the vibrant sounds of Brazilian baile funk to a wider audience and pushing the boundaries of genre and cultural exchange.
