Philippine Food Prices Face Potential Surge Amidst Gulf Crisis

MANILA, Philippines – Retail prices of rice, pork, and chicken in the Philippines could increase by at least 50% under a worst-case scenario stemming from escalating tensions in the Gulf region, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA). The potential price hikes are linked to disruptions in supply chains and rising costs of crucial farm inputs like fuel and fertilizer.

Potential Price Increases

The DA presented several scenarios to the Senate committee on Tuesday, March 25, based on local production estimates. The most concerning scenario projects significant price increases within 180 days if infrastructure damage occurs and average oil prices reach $200 per barrel.

  • Chicken: A potential 62% increase, raising the average retail price from PHP200 per kilogram to PHP324.64 per kilogram.
  • Pork (Kasim and Liempo): Estimated to increase by 59%, reaching PHP558.10 per kilogram for pork ham and PHP588 per kilogram for pork belly, up from PHP350 and PHP370 respectively.
  • Rice (Local, Well-Milled): Projected to rise by 49%.
  • Vegetables: Slight increases are anticipated for tomatoes, eggplants, cabbage, and carrots.

Current Market Situation

As of now, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. Stated that prices remain stable at pre-conflict levels. However, he anticipates potential increases in rice prices beginning in August. Pork prices are currently stable due to existing imports in cold storage, and the poultry industry is experiencing a slight overproduction, keeping broiler farm gate prices low.

Mitigation Measures and Import Options

Secretary Tiu Laurel emphasized that the DA has options to mitigate potential price surges, including importing additional supplies or reducing tariffs. However, he expressed a preference for avoiding these measures, stating, “But of course, as the department secretary, I don’t want that.”

The DA is also focused on expanding sourcing strategies for pork and poultry to address constraints in local production caused by animal diseases like African Swine Fever .

Government Assurances on Trade Negotiations

Trade negotiators have assured the Department of Agriculture that key agricultural products, including rice, corn, sugar, chicken, fish, and pork, will be protected in ongoing tariff discussions with the United States . Secretaries Frederick Go and Cristina Roque have prioritized protecting local producers during these negotiations.

Energy Emergency Declaration

On Tuesday, March 25, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Declared a state of national energy emergency, highlighting the broader economic challenges facing the country .
