Rice University Launches One Giant Leap Ventures Fund I for Spinouts

Rice University has launched One Giant Leap Ventures Fund I, an early-stage institutional venture fund designed to invest in university spinouts and alumni-founded startups, news.rice.edu reported. The fund held its first close in August and made its initial investment in the brain health startup Motif Neurotech.

One Giant Leap Ventures targets Rice-affiliated companies

One Giant Leap Ventures is structured to accept capital from both equity limited partners and philanthropic investors. The fund will deploy up to $500,000 into Rice-affiliated companies. Eligible businesses include those founded by alumni, students, or faculty, as well as ventures built on Rice-licensed intellectual property.

The fund operates under a rules-based model. Startups must be Rice-affiliated and secure a qualified lead investor to provide market validation before the fund participates. Qualifying companies then advance to the fund’s Investment Advisory Committee for review. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader served as legal counsel in structuring the fund to accommodate both traditional limited-partner commitments and philanthropic contributions.

Alongside its first close, the fund announced an investment in Motif Neurotech, a startup led by Rice electrical computer engineering and bioengineering professor Jacob Robinson. Motif is commercializing a minimally invasive brain-computer interface based on more than a decade of research at Rice, initially targeting treatment-resistant depression.
