Richmond’s popular Story Cafe is grappling with the aftermath of a devastating fire that severely damaged its patio area on the night of March 2, 2026. The incident, currently under investigation as a potential arson, has left the future of the beloved community hub uncertain.

Extent of the Damage

Owner Kingsley Ho discovered the extensive damage early Sunday morning, describing the scene as “heartbreaking.” The fire caused significant damage to the patio structure, including the glass roof, tables, chairs, propane heaters, aluminum low walls, speakers, and wind guards. The estimated damages are nearly $100,000 according to reports.

Swift Response Prevents Further Damage

Fortunately, the Richmond Fire Department’s quick response prevented the fire from spreading to the interior of the restaurant, allowing it to remain open. Dished Vancouver reports that the restaurant remains operational despite the patio closure.

Community Impact and Concerns

The Story Cafe, which opened in 2018, is known for its comfort food and dog-friendly patio, making it a popular gathering place in the Richmond community. Richmond News highlights the cafe’s role in connecting community members through food, music, and a collection of antiques.

Ho expressed concern about the financial impact, particularly during the typically slow winter season. He also noted the impact on the restaurant’s over 50 employees and their families. “For a small business like ours, this is overwhelming,” Ho stated.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing, and the restaurant is working with its insurance company to assess the extent of the coverage and plan for the patio’s restoration. At this point, the timeline for reopening the patio remains uncertain. “We honestly don’t know how or when we will be able to fully restore the patio,” Ho said.
