Richter Audio Unveils Series 7 Special Edition Loudspeakers: A Blend of Acoustics and Aesthetics

Australian loudspeaker manufacturer Richter Audio has announced its modern Series 7 Special Edition (S7SE) loudspeakers, marking a significant step in the company’s 40-year history of loudspeaker design. The range, comprising the Excalibur, Dragon, Wizard and Aurora models, aims to seamlessly integrate acoustic performance with contemporary design sensibilities.

A New Design Philosophy

According to Richter Managing Director Brian Rodgers, the Series 7 was developed to address a key challenge in high-performance loudspeakers: creating products that are visually appealing as well as sonically impressive. “Our brief was clear – to design a speaker you’re as proud to look at as you are to listen to. Collaboration and Engineering

The development of the S7SE range involved a collaboration between Richter’s long-time acoustical engineer, Dr. Martin Gosnell, and industrial designer Adam Hobbs. Key Features and Innovations

• Cabinet Design: The Series 7SE features newly-curved cabinet designs with real Natural Walnut veneers and matching anthracite-grey baffles. Optional mottled-grey cloth grilles and subtle “shiny bling” accents are also available.
• Mid-Bass Drivers: New and improved mid-bass drivers utilize ultra-rigid, lightweight cones in precision-engineered cast alloy baskets.
• Bass Drivers: Bass drivers benefit from larger voice coils for enhanced performance.
• ‘SE Teardrop’ Module: A new high-frequency module, dubbed the ‘SE Teardrop,’ houses a 25mm high-output neodymium-backed tweeter and a 70mm soft-dome midrange. This module is mounted vertically in the floorstanding models and pivots sideways in the Aurora standmount.
• D’Appolito Configuration: The Dragon and Excalibur models employ a D’Appolito configuration, flanking the ‘SE Teardrop’ with two 6.5-inch mid-bass drivers to create a symmetrical “wall of sound.”
• Crossover Networks: The Excalibur S7SE utilizes an 119cm-high 4.5-way crossover network, while the Dragon S7SE (109cm-high) is a 4-way design, and the Wizard S7SE (101cm-high) is a 3.5-way design. Even the Aurora standmount is a three-way design.

The Mid-Dome Advantage

Richter’s decision to incorporate large mid-dome drivers is notable, as they are relatively uncommon in this price range. Mid-domes offer potential advantages such as a dispersion pattern similar to dome tweeters, extended frequency response, and a faster, more natural sound for vocals.
