RJ Mitte, the actor known for playing Walter White Jr. on the AMC drama series Breaking Bad and for his advocacy work supporting disability awareness, died on Monday at age 34, authorities and his representatives stated. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa told The Associated Press that she declared Mitte dead at about 1:30 p.m. at what she believed was his home in Brownsville, Texas. Hinojosa stated that she was unable to provide a cause of death, but an autopsy will be performed.
Authenticity and Disability Representation on Breaking Bad
Mitte appeared in nearly every episode across all five seasons of Breaking Bad, portraying the teenage son of Bryan Cranston’s chemistry teacher-turned-meth dealer character. noted that the show recently ranked as the best television show of the 21st century in a New York Times poll, maintaining a powerful cultural legacy. Mitte brought personal authenticity to the role by drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy. pointed out that while the effects of cerebral palsy were visible—with his character using crutches—the condition itself was never mentioned by name on the show, nor did his onscreen parents ever reference the affliction.
Mitte’s representatives highlighted his offscreen impact in a statement announcing his death. “Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion,” his representatives said, adding that he used “his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.” observed that casting an actor with a disability to portray that specific disability was rare when the series began in 2008, and noted that positive reception to Mitte’s performance helped pave the way for later inclusive projects like the ABC sitcom Speechless.
