With the Bremen police on the way to more road safety for seniors

Mobility means freedom – especially in old age. But this is exactly where a challenge often lies: uncertainty in road traffic, new legal regulations or simply physical changes can become a burden. In order to proactively address these developments, the Horn-Lehe district branch, together with the Bremen Police Prevention Center, is inviting you to a special event on Wednesday, February 25th: “Fit and mobile – reach your destination safely”. The aim is to support older people in their mobility, improve safety and provide practical tips for everyday life.

Mobility in old age: More than just getting around

“As you get older, mobility often becomes a challenge,” explains Birte Kommnick, community manager at the Horn-Lehe district branch. “We observe that older people are particularly at risk in road traffic – be it on foot, by bike or by car.” The reasons are varied: physical limitations, changing traffic situations or a growing feeling of insecurity. But mobility also means quality of life. Those who remain mobile remain self-determined.

That’s why the event is not just about dangers, but above all about solutions. Participants expect information about accident risks, fitness to drive in old age, new traffic rules and preventative behavior in everyday life. The offer is supplemented by the possibility of exchange.

Bremen Police as a strong partner for more security

“Collaborations with local institutions such as the Bremen police are crucial in order to address the issue of traffic safety credibly and effectively,” emphasizes Kommnick. The police not only bring specialist knowledge and current data on accident rates, but also convey security through their presence. Practical tips, presented in an understandable manner and tailored directly to the target group, are the focus of the event.

This collaboration clearly shows that prevention is not a one-way street. It’s about creating trust and encouraging older people to continue to actively participate in traffic – well informed and with a strengthened sense of security.

A place for meeting and community

The event takes place in a district branch of Sparkasse Bremen – and with good reason. The Sparkasse no longer sees itself as just a financial service provider, but as an active part of the local community. “Our district branches are places where we meet,” says Kommnick. “Events that promote information, education and cultural exchange take place here regularly.”

Such events offer a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas, especially for older people who feel restricted in their mobility – in a safe environment and on topics that directly affect them. District branches not only offer space, but also trust and continuity for long-term prevention offers.

For older people and relatives

“The event is aimed at seniors who want to remain mobile but may have uncertainty about road traffic,” explains Kommnick. But relatives can also receive valuable information – for example, how they can support their loved ones in everyday life.

A visit is worthwhile for anyone who would like to actively engage with the topic of safe mobility in old age. Because knowledge, exchange and learning together are the best prerequisites for being able to travel safely and independently even in old age.
