Rob Howard Wins Richmond Mayoral Race by 880 Votes

Former Richmond councillor Rob Howard secured the mayoral seat by defeating former councillor Alexa Loo by 880 votes, according to final results reported by the Vancouver Sun and Yahoo News Canada. The election concluded a tight, two-person race that featured third-place finisher Kash Heed, a former councillor and Vancouver Police Department inspector.

The mayoral vacancy opened after eight-term mayor Malcolm Brodie announced he would not run for re-election earlier this year. Both Howard and Heed previously served as MLAs in the former B.C. Liberal government, while Loo ran as a candidate for the same party during her political career.

Public Safety Focus and Council Coalition Plans

Door-knocking campaigns across Richmond revealed public safety as the primary concern for local voters, prompting Howard to designate neighborhood security as his top priority upon taking office. “We have to take on initiatives that will make people feel safer,” Howard stated at Lavash Seaside Grill late Saturday night, as reported by the Richmond News.

Howard stated he can collaborate effectively with the newly elected council members despite differing political affiliations. “I built my career out of working with all sorts of people,” Howard said. The incoming council includes Gary Law, Carol Day, Michael Wolfe, Sheldon Starrett, Laura Gillanders, Kenny Chiu, Andy Hobbs, and Kevin Lai, representing various slates such as Advance Richmond, RITE Richmond, Richmond United, and Common Sense.

“To the newly-elected members of council, regardless of political affiliation, I extend my hand in cooperation — the campaign is over, now it’s time to come together and govern for all of Richmond,” Howard said, as noted by Yahoo News Canada.

Contrasting Campaign Issues and Candidate Reactions

Homelessness, drug policy, and supportive housing dominated campaign debates following a previous council term marked by protests against new supportive housing and supervised drug consumption sites. Challengers and supporters gathered at various watch parties as results rolled in late Saturday evening.

Alexa Loo finished in second place and visited Howard’s watch party to offer her congratulations. Kash Heed reflected on his third-place finish by telling supporters that the campaign made him stronger and more resilient. Richmond News reported that school trustees Ken Hamaguchi, Heather Larson, Rod Belleza, Danny Chang, Dean Billings, Alice Wong, and Donna Sargent won election to the school board, while long-term trustee Debbie Tablotney lost her re-election bid.
