Robert Carradine, ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Star, Dies at 71

Robert Carradine, best known for his role as Sam McGuire in the Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire,” has died, his family confirmed Tuesday, February 24, 2026. He was 71 years old.

Carradine succumbed to bipolar disorder after battling it for nearly 20 years, according to a statement released by his family Rolling Stone.

A Beloved On-Screen Father

Carradine portrayed the father of the titular character, Lizzie McGuire, played by Hilary Duff, for two seasons from 2001 to 2004. The role cemented his place in the hearts of a generation.

Hilary Duff shared her grief on Instagram, posting photos from the set and writing, “This one hurts. It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him.” US Magazine

Jake Thomas, who played Lizzie’s brother Matt, also expressed his sorrow on social media, describing Carradine as “one of the coolest guys you could ever meet.” He added, “He was a talented actor, musician, and director, but more than anything, he was family.” Deadline

A Prolific Career

Born in Hollywood in 1954, Robert Carradine came from a prominent acting family. He amassed over 150 acting credits throughout his career. He was the son of actor John Carradine and brother to actors Christopher and Keith Carradine. NBC News

Carradine gained recognition for his role in the 1984 comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” and continued to appear in numerous television shows and films.

He is survived by his children, Ian Carradine and Marica Reed Carradine.
