Roberto Benigni Leads Sunday Night Television With Saint Francis Special on Rai 1
Italian television viewers face a stark choice on Sunday, October 4, 2026, as Rai 1 clears its regular prime-time schedule for a special event dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, preempting its usual lineup, libero.it reported. While Rai 1 broadcasts Roberto Benigni’s theatrical exploration of the patron saint, commercial networks and rival public channels counter with investigative journalism, foreign drama, and talk shows across the evening.
The broadcast arrives as Italy marks the October 4 national holiday celebrating Saint Francis, an official red-letter day on the calendar that falls on a Sunday this year, La Nazione reported. The legislative reinstatement of the holiday, backed nearly unanimously in parliament, brings renewed focus to the historical figure as the country approaches the 800th anniversary of his death, Il Messaggero reported. Unlike standard variety programming, Sunday night’s television schedule pivots heavily toward cultural reflection and public service broadcasting.
Rai 1 Preempts Regular Schedule for Francis of Assisi Event
Rai 1 drops its standard Sunday entertainment, including Stefano De Martino’s game show Your Business, to make room for a dedicated evening built around the life and writings of Saint Francis, libero.it reported. The network opens its prime-time block at 20:35 with Francis – The Canticle, featuring actor and director Roberto Benigni interpreting the Canticle of the Creatures and exploring the historical figure’s message of peace and poverty. Benigni stated in promotional interviews covered by La Nazione that he aims to present a true Francis with an extraordinary life that surprises audiences. Following Benigni’s opening performance, journalist Giorgia Cardinaletti hosts Francis, the Saint of all at 21:55 in a live broadcast connecting Perugia with the Upper Basilica of Assisi.
Political figures and commentators view the cultural focus on Saint Francis as a unifying element during a period of geopolitical uncertainty. Il Messaggero noted that President Sergio Mattarella participates in the Assisi observances to reinforce the idea of a cohesive national community. While center-right commentators view the saint as a foundational guardian of Christian and national tradition, secular analysts emphasize his modern relevance as an early advocate for peace and environmental stewardship.
Competing Networks Offer Investigation, Crime Drama, and Talk Shows
Rival broadcasters counter Rai 1’s cultural event with a diverse selection of scripted series, investigative reports, and imported dramas. Canale 5 launches its prime-time schedule at 21:21 with the Turkish drama Story of a Night, featuring an ensemble cast including Burak Deniz and Su Burcu Coskun in a story centering on a detective returning to Denizli to investigate a decades-old murder, libero.it reported. Meanwhile, Rai 2 schedules back-to-back episodes of the American police procedural The Rookie beginning at 21:00, following the late-in-life career shift of officer John Nolan.
Investigative journalism anchors the schedules of Rai 3 and Italia 1. Riccardo Iacona leads Direct take on Rai 3 at 20:30 with field reports covering public accounts, healthcare, and climate policy. Italia 1 counters at 21:13 with Le Iene present: Inside, featuring Luigi Pelazza reporting on online trading frauds and illegal call center networks operating between Italy and Albania. Rete 4 maintains its political talk format with Mario Giordano hosting Out of the chorus at 21:34, addressing public spending and social friction.
