Roberto Clemente Family Endorses Gus Bilirakis for Reelection
The family of legendary baseball star Roberto Clemente has endorsed the reelection campaign of Republican U.S. Representative Gus Bilirakis of Florida, according to a report by elnuevodia.com. The endorsement follows a congressional resolution introduced by Bilirakis to place a statue of the first Latin American to reach 3,000 Major League Baseball hits in or around the United States Capitol.
In a formal statement provided to elnuevodia.com, the Clemente family praised the Florida lawmaker’s dedication to public service. “Our father, Roberto Clemente, believed in serving others and opening doors for future generations. Gus Bilirakis shares that commitment to service and has worked to honor the legacy of our father,” the family stated. They also credited Bilirakis with advocating for healthcare funding, disaster recovery support, and manufacturing job creation in Puerto Rico.
Bilirakis, who represents a district in the Tampa Bay region, expressed gratitude for the backing. “I feel deeply honored to have the support of the Clemente family. The legacy of service and compassion of Roberto Clemente continues inspiring generations, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to contribute to honoring him,” Bilirakis said, as reported by elnuevodia.com.
Legislative Efforts on Medicaid and Puerto Rico Relief
Bilirakis is running on November 3 for an eighth term in the House of Representatives. Serving on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the Republican congressman holds jurisdiction over the Medicaid program, which faces significant funding cliffs.
To address healthcare funding gaps in the territory, Bilirakis is collaborating with Democratic U.S. Representative Darren Soto of Central Florida on legislation to reauthorize Medicaid funds for Puerto Rico. Bilirakis emphasized his ongoing legislative priorities, noting his work to improve healthcare access, assist with disaster recovery, and expand manufacturing opportunities on the island.
The endorsement from the Clemente family adds to prior political alignments involving the baseball icon’s relatives. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Roberto Clemente Jr. endorsed Donald Trump, stating that the former president represented a change of era and values centered on goodwill and unity.
