Roberto Moreno Named First Spanish Interim Manager of South Korea National Team

Moreno becomes the first Spanish-born head coach in the history of the national team, taking over following a leadership vacuum after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

KFA Appointment and Contract Details

According to the KFA, Moreno and his coaching staff were approved during the association’s 7th board of directors meeting held at the Korea Football Park in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. The KFA structured the appointment under an open recruitment process following the Korea Sport & Olympic Committee’s national representative selection and management regulations. The agreement includes a provision that allows for an evaluation after these six games, with potential extension through the upcoming Asian Cup.

All-Spanish Coaching Staff

Moreno arrives with a complete staff of five compatriots who previously worked with him at Russian club PFC Sochi. According to the KFA, the accompanying coaching team consists of senior coach Eduardo Cocampo, coaches Jacinto Magriñá and Víctor Bravo de Soto, physical coach Javier Chocarro, and goalkeeper coach Nico Bosch.

Background and Selection Process

The managerial vacancy opened after the resignation of former head coach Hong Myung-bo following South Korea’s group-stage exit at the 2026 World Cup. The KFA’s National Team Committee conducted an open recruitment process that drew 22 applicants, which was eventually narrowed down to a final shortlist of five candidates including Domènec Torrent, Jesús Casas, Erwin Koeman, and Štefan Tarkovič. Moreno emerged as the top choice following a series of online interviews conducted by the committee alongside three external members, impressing officials with his long-standing analysis of South Korean football and his structured training methodology.

Future Matches and Outlook

Moreno inherits a squad facing immediate competitive fixtures in the autumn international windows. Addressing supporters through his personal website, Moreno stated, “I won’t promise results. Instead, I promise hard work, honesty, and respect.” The newly appointed technical staff will oversee the national team’s training camp in Cheonan as they prepare for the upcoming September A-match schedule.
