NCIS Shocker: Rocky Carroll Reflects on Leon Vance’s Exit After 18 Seasons
The 500th episode of NCIS delivered a stunning twist to fans: the death of Director Leon Vance, portrayed by Rocky Carroll for nearly two decades. Even as the storyline shocked viewers, Carroll reveals the decision wasn’t his own, but one he ultimately embraced as a fitting conclusion to his character’s arc.
A Storyline Initiated by Producers
According to an interview with TVLine, Carroll was approached by executive producer Steven D. Binder with the idea for Vance’s fate. “He came into my trailer and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got an idea for the 500th episode… We want to do something that really sends shockwaves through the TV community and the fan base, and your character is central to the storyline,’” Carroll recalled.
The storyline involved NCIS facing potential shutdown, with Vance ultimately saving the agency at the cost of his own life. Carroll admitted to an initial “out-of-body experience” upon hearing the proposal, but quickly recognized the dramatic potential.
18 Seasons and a Fitting Conclusion
Carroll joined NCIS in Season 5 (2008), initially expecting a relatively short run. “I literally thought when I joined the series that I was coming in probably on the tail end,” he stated. However, the show’s success led to an unprecedented 18-season tenure for his character.
Despite potentially wanting to be among the last characters standing when the show eventually concludes, Carroll expressed satisfaction with the storyline’s closure. He described the 500th episode as a “tribute and a love letter” to his character, allowing Vance to go out on a high note.
A Legacy Beyond the Director’s Chair
While Vance’s on-screen journey has ended, Rocky Carroll’s involvement with NCIS isn’t over. He will continue to direct episodes of the show, ensuring his creative influence remains.
The 500th episode saw Vance successfully clear a petty officer’s name—the sister of someone Gibbs had helped early in the series—and restore NCIS to its former glory before being fatally shot by a corrupt agent.
Vance’s Final Moments
The episode featured a poignant, imagined reunion between Vance and the late Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard (Adam Campbell), with Ducky guiding Vance into the afterlife. This scene, taking place in what was normally Vance’s assistant’s office, added an emotional layer to his departure.
