Ross Smith Claims Players Championship 5 Title in Leicester

Ross Smith secured his seventh career Players Championship title with an 8-2 victory over Chris Dobey in Leicester on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The 37-year-vintage Englishman averaged an impressive 104.39 in the final, dominating a subdued performance from his opponent.

Dominant Performance Throughout the Day

Smith’s path to the title was marked by consistent performances, averaging over 95 in all but one of his seven matches. He overcame Karel Sedlacek and Dave Chisnall in the semi-finals and quarter-finals, respectively. Earlier in the day, Smith recorded wins against Niko Springer, Michael Smith, Cor Dekker, and Justin Hood.

Dobey’s Mixed Day

Despite a stunning nine-darter against Ricky Evans in the second round, Chris Dobey couldn’t replicate that form in the final. He secured victories against Kevin Doets, Danny Noppert, and Christian Kist, along with Joe Cullen in the semi-finals, before facing Smith. Although, Dobey struggled with his doubles, missing 13 darts at double in the final.

Premier League Upsets

The tournament also saw some surprising results involving Premier League Darts stars. Top seed Gerwyn Price was defeated 6-2 by Adam Lipscombe in his opening match, even as Jonny Clayton and Josh Rock also suffered early exits. Luke Littler, Luke Humphries, Gian van Veen, Michael van Gerwen and Stephen Bunting did not participate in this week’s Players Championship events.

Smith Sets Sights on Continued Success

“I played consistently well today. I rode my luck a bit but you need a bit of luck along the way to win a title, unless you’re playing exceptional,” Smith said after the win. “Thankfully for me, Chris didn’t turn up. We all know Chris is one of the best in the world. I’m grateful to beat him and I’m happy.”

Smith added, “I felt relaxed today. It’s the best I’ve felt this year. I’m glad with the win. I always set myself a target of winning at least one title every year, so I’m on course now for 2026.”
