Fire Damages Newly Built Baroeg Pop Venue in Rotterdam
A fire broke out in the newly constructed building of Baroeg, a prominent pop music venue in Rotterdam, on the night of February 19th. While the damage is primarily external and to the office area, the incident has raised concerns just months before its scheduled reopening in April.
What Happened?
The fire originated in a construction shed adjacent to the latest Baroeg building on Spinozaweg in Rotterdam-Lombardijen around 11:00 PM on Thursday. The flames quickly spread to the roof of the venue, requiring firefighters to demolish parts of the building to extinguish the blaze. Rijnmond reports that the fire was under control by 1:00 AM.
Extent of the Damage
According to Baroeg officials, the damage is concentrated on the exterior and within the office section of the building. In a statement released on February 20th, the venue indicated that the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but they remain optimistic.
Impact on Reopening and Concerts
Despite the fire, Baroeg is currently planning to proceed with its official reopening scheduled for April 25th, as well as all planned concerts. NOS News reports that the venue communicated this information via Instagram, reassuring fans (“Baroegianen”) about the continuation of events.
Background on Baroeg
Baroeg is Rotterdam’s oldest pop music venue. The original building, which had become outdated, was demolished in 2024, and the new facility was recently completed.
Investigation and Response
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Baroeg has expressed gratitude to the fire department and police of Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam Rijnmond for their swift response. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
