Royal Caribbean Diverts Oasis of the Seas to Canada Due to Severe Weather
Passengers booked on a Royal Caribbean cruise destined for the Caribbean experienced an unexpected itinerary change when severe weather forced the ship north toward Canada instead of Florida and the Bahamas. The Oasis of the Seas departed from New Jersey with thousands of passengers finding themselves having to don warm clothing due to a change in itinerary caused by bad weather.
Last-Minute Route Shift Baffling Passengers
The sudden change in destination left travelers with only a few hours of notice before departure. Marie Durning, a resident of New Jersey interviewed by CTV News, said her husband initially thought the announcement was a joke. Passengers quickly realized they needed to swap tropical gear for heavy coats, wool hats, and earmuffs as the vessel altered its course away from warmer waters.

The original seven-day itinerary included stops at Port Canaveral in Florida and the Bahamas. Instead, worsening sea conditions pushed the captain to steer the ship toward Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Ron Green of Virginia told CTV News aboard the docked ship that deteriorating weather ultimately redirected them north.
Halifax Stopover and Passenger Reactions
The cruise ship spent a single day docked in Halifax before sailing back toward US waters to conclude the voyage in New Jersey. Reactions among travelers varied sharply based on personal expectations. Nicholas Meli drove seven hours from Toronto to New Jersey specifically for a warm-weather vacation, expressing clear disappointment at heading toward his home country’s climate instead of the Bahamas. Conversely, other travelers embraced the unexpected detour. The Hicks family from Philadelphia urged relatives to vent their frustrations before boarding so they could enjoy the journey, joking that the Canadian port felt halfway to the North Pole.
Compensation and Return Schedule
Royal Caribbean issued refunds for all pre-booked shore excursions and provided passengers with a future cruise credit equal to 50% of their ticket value to offset the disruption. Following the one-day Canadian stopover, the ship departed Halifax at 6:00 p.m.
