Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – A recent epidemiological study has highlighted the ongoing impact of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in the Dominican Republic, particularly among young children. Pediatricians are urging the government to include an RSV vaccine in the national immunization program to mitigate the virus’s effects and reduce hospitalizations.

A recent study revealed sustained RSV circulation within the Dominican Republic, with heightened activity during the rainy season. Dr. Bienvenido Segura, a clinical pediatrician with over 35 years of experience, is advocating for the urgent inclusion of an RSV vaccine in the Dominican Republic’s regular immunization program. He believes that vaccination is a key preventative measure that will strengthen protection against RSV and reduce the number of child hospitalizations.

“Every year, thousands of families face hospitalizations and prolonged treatments for RSV, which represents a significant economic burden for families and the health system,” said Dr. Segura. “Today we have scientific tools that allow us to prevent many of these complications and by including this vaccine in the immunization program what is being done is an investment in life, tranquility and well-being.”

Potential Benefits of RSV Vaccination

The implementation of an RSV vaccination program is expected to yield several benefits, including:

Dr. Segura noted that the RSV vaccine is already available in several countries and can be acquired at special prices through the Revolving Fund of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). It is estimated that the vaccine could protect between 180,000 and 200,000 children born in the Dominican Republic annually.

Dr. Segura is calling for collaboration between health authorities, medical societies, and regulatory bodies to assess the technical, economic, and logistical feasibility of incorporating the RSV vaccine into the Expanded Immunization Program of the Directorate of Immunopreventables of the Ministry of Public Health.
