Sporting CP Coach Rui Borges Addresses Demanding League Schedule

Lisbon, portugal – November 29, 2025 – Sporting CP manager Rui Borges addressed concerns regarding the congested Portuguese Liga schedule following his side’s recent participation in the League Cup. Speaking ahead of Sporting’s match against Estrela da Amadora in the 12th round of the league, Borges emphasized the need for pragmatic solutions rather than dwelling on complaints about the fixture list.

Borges acknowledged the challenges posed by the current schedule, noting that sporting played with minimal recovery time after thier league Cup commitments. “It’s not about being satisfied, the calendar has a permanent committee, the calendar was defined, we played barely 48 hours after the League Cup and we didn’t complain. As simple as that, it is indeed what it is, that’s what the calendar is,” he stated.

He further pointed out the impact of postponed matches on other teams, specifically mentioning FC Porto. “FC Porto postponed their game, they have one more game now. We’ve also played a game without rest.”

Despite the demanding schedule,Borges expressed a positive outlook, highlighting the players’ desire to compete frequently. “It’s about finding solutions, more than anything else. if you ask players, they want to play every two days. I’m not going to dwell too much on that,” he concluded.

Borges’ comments reflect a broader discussion within Portuguese football regarding the balance between competitive intensity and player welfare. The Liga Portugal board regularly reviews the scheduling format, aiming to optimize the calendar for both sporting merit and the physical demands placed on athletes.
