Runaway Boat Causes Freeway Chaos in Southern California

A bizarre incident unfolded on a Southern California highway on Sunday, March 1, when a boat became detached from its trailer and careened across multiple lanes of the 91 Freeway, narrowly avoiding collisions.

Incident Details

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. On the 91 Freeway in Bellflower, near the Lakewood exit. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the boat, which had come loose from a U-Haul trailer, crossed all eastbound lanes before jumping the median and entering oncoming traffic .

Cassandra Sorrell, a driver traveling westbound, recounted the harrowing experience to KABC-TV. “I’m driving, and I’m looking, and I’m like, ‘There is a boat!’ It was unbelievable,” she said. “I had just moments to react. It was like something out of a movie.”

Sorrell’s Tesla cameras captured the near-miss, and she reported experiencing whiplash and minor damage to her vehicle .

Investigation and Search for Responsible Party

The CHP shut down the freeway for several hours while investigating the incident. Authorities are currently searching for the driver of the U-Haul who continued driving after the boat detached .

The registered owner of the boat has claimed to have sold the vessel and does not know the identity of the buyer, a detail that authorities are investigating further .

Cargo Safety and Legal Implications

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that unsecured loads contribute to 730 fatalities and 17,000 injuries annually. 81% of these crashes involve unsecured loads on passenger vehicles.

NHTSA recommends securing cargo with rope, netting, or straps, and for larger items, tying them directly to the vehicle or trailer. Drivers are also advised to cover loads with a sturdy tarp or netting and avoid excessive cargo. All 50 states and Washington, D.C., have laws regarding unsecured loads, with penalties potentially reaching $5,000 .

Anyone with video footage of the incident is encouraged to contact the CHP to assist with the investigation.
