Ahead of his Security Council address, Lavrov met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the UN General Assembly in New York for approximately one hour, according to the Russian agency Interfax. The discussions marked the fifth meeting between the top diplomats of both countries since 2025.
Washington Extends Miami G20 Invitation to Putin
During the UN gatherings, Rubio stated that Washington remains prepared to play a constructive role in securing an armistice. As part of ongoing diplomatic outreach, Rubio announced that the United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami.
“To solve problems, you need to meet with people with whom you have disagreements or certain frictions, so we invited President Putin to the G20 summit,” Rubio said. He noted that the event would provide an opportunity for the Russian leader to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
Shifting International Timelines for a Winter Settlement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously expressed hope that the war with Russia could conclude by winter with the assistance of Donald Trump.
U.S. President Donald Trump similarly indicated that his administration is actively working toward a settlement and expressed optimism that a resolution could be reached before winter. Trump also raised the possibility of holding another personal meeting with his Russian counterpart. This followed a meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly that left the Ukrainian leadership signaling readiness for talks.
