Leader of Russia’s Communist Party Warns Parliament of Revolution Risk Over Faltering Economy Gennady Zyuganov, the veteran leader of Russia’s Communist Party, has warned the State Duma that the country’s faltering economy risks triggering a 1917-style revolution unless urgent economic measures are taken. Speaking at a plenary session of the State Duma on April 22, 2026, Zyuganov warned that without immediate financial and economic interventions, Russia faces the prospect of social upheaval reminiscent of the Bolshevik Revolution over a century ago. His remarks were made ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for September 2026. “We’re doing everything we can to support (President Vladimir) Putin and his strategy and policies, but you (the government) are not listening,” Zyuganov said during his address. He added that a recent government meeting convened by Putin had been “the gloomiest in a long time.” Zyuganov emphasized that if the government does not urgently adopt financial, economic and other measures, “by autumn a repeat of what happened in 1917 awaits us. We don’t have the right to repeat that. Let’s take some decisions.” Despite his warning, there is currently no sign of serious social unrest in Russia, amid tight wartime censorship, protest bans, long jail sentences for dissidents and the growing influence of the Federal Security Service, the main successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB. Although Zyuganov’s party, the second largest in parliament, is the main successor to the Soviet Communist Party, it has long backed Putin and his core policies, offering carefully-calibrated criticism of the ruling United Russia party from within the tightly controlled political system. The Communist leader’s appeal comes as Russia continues to face economic strain, with official data showing the economy shrank by 1.8 percent in the first two months of 2026. Putin has previously asked officials to develop growth policies to address these challenges.
