Ryan Leonard Scores Coast-to-Coast Goal to Lead Capitals Over Devils

Ryan Leonard recorded a career-highlight, coast-to-coast goal on Saturday afternoon, carrying the puck nearly the full length of the ice to spark a 4-2 victory for the Washington Capitals against the New Jersey Devils. Leonard split New Jersey’s defenders during the first-period power play, netting his third goal of the season and helping the Capitals secure back-to-back wins.

Capitalizing on a D-Zone Breakout

The play began behind the Washington net after the Devils cleared the puck down the ice. Goaltender Logan Thompson steadied the puck and passed it to Jakob Chychrun, who connected with Leonard at the right circle. Leonard skated from his defensive zone to the opposite blue line, executing a backhand-forehand dangle between defenseman Luke Hughes and forward Evan Rodriguez. He then beat Timo Meier in a footrace and stepped over Hughes’ stick to score on goaltender Jake Allen.

Leonard said postgame that an earlier moment in the power play revealed vulnerabilities in New Jersey’s defense. Head coach Spencer Carbery noted that Leonard’s edge work in tight areas created a difficult situation for the Devils’ penalty kill forecheck. Once you get into a space where you’re attacking that middle D with some speed, and Leno is extremely deceptive, good on his edges, and I was like, [Hughes is] in a real vulnerable spot, Carbery said.

Sparking the Washington Comeback

New Jersey opened the scoring midway through the first period when Arsenal Gritsyuk beat Logan Thompson through traffic during a power play. Leonard’s goal with 3:18 remaining in the first period tied the game and shifted momentum. In the second period, the Capitals scored three goals. Ilya Protas capitalized on a cross-zone feed from Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome finished a passing play from Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou, and Boone Jenner tucked in a point drive for his fourth goal in five games.

The Devils pressed late in the third period, with Timo Meier scoring with 18.4 seconds remaining in regulation. However, Logan Thompson stopped 29 of 31 shots to preserve the 4-2 win. Jake Allen recorded 21 saves for New Jersey.

Team Standings and Upcoming Schedule

With the victory, the Capitals improved their early-season form, while the Devils dropped to 4-4-0. Leonard, who signed an eight-year extension worth $10.5 million per season in September, now shares the team scoring lead with Alex Tuch, each holding seven points through eight games.

The Capitals return to action on Tuesday to host the Los Angeles Kings. The Devils return home to face the Colorado Avalanche on the same night.
