Sabalenka Defeats Osaka in Indian Wells, Reaching Quarterfinals

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Naomi Osaka on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The match marked the first encounter between the two Grand Slam champions in eight years.

Dominant Performance by Sabalenka

Sabalenka showcased her power and consistency, breaking Osaka’s serve early in both sets to establish control. She secured the first set with an ace and continued her strong play in the second, breaking Osaka at 4-2 before closing out the match.

“It’s crazy, for so many years we only played once. I’m pretty sure we are playing many more matches. She’s coming back playing great tennis,” Sabalenka said after the match. “I’m pretty happy with the result – much better than last time.”

Osaka’s Return to Form

Despite the loss, Osaka has demonstrated a strong return to form since taking a 14-month break from competition around the birth of her daughter, Shai, in July 2023. She entered the court for her first-round match at Indian Wells sporting gold jewelry on her face and a leopard-inspired outfit, and previously made a bold fashion statement at the Australian Open with a white top hat, umbrella, and veil.

Sabalenka’s Path to the Quarterfinals

Sabalenka has continued her winning streak against players ranked outside the WTA Top 20, defeating Jacqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1 in the previous round. She will now face Victoria Mboko in the quarterfinals, who defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 6-1.

Other Notable Results

Australia’s Talia Gibson achieved the biggest win of her career, defeating world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Gibson, ranked 112th in the world and a qualifier, is the first player in 11 years to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament as a qualifier.

Looking Ahead

Sabalenka aims to improve upon her runner-up finish at Indian Wells last year. Her quarterfinal match against Mboko promises to be a challenging contest as she continues her pursuit of the title.
