Sacramento Sikh Truck Driver Stabbed 17 Times in Wyoming Rest Stop Attack

A Sacramento Sikh truck driver was stabbed 17 times in an unprovoked attack at a Wyoming truck stop on Sunday. He suffered severe injuries before escaping and receiving help from a passing family, according to local reports and community advocates.

The Brutal Assault Along Interstate 80

The victim, a trucker who has operated along the Interstate 80 corridor for nearly four years, stopped at a rest area in Wyoming to use the restroom. Jasjit Singh, an attorney and director of legal services with the Jakara Movement, said the driver was wearing a headset and talking to his cousin when the assailant approached from behind without warning.

Inside the Restroom Ambush

The suspect punched the victim repeatedly before pulling out a knife and launching the stabbing, according to the driver’s account provided to his attorney.

The attack left the driver with defensive wounds on his arms, a fractured right arm, deep gashes, and a rib-cage wound that required a chest tube. The Sacramento Bee identified the suspected attacker as Andrew Kris Bzdak. Inmate records from the Sweetwater County Detention Center show Bzdak has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and is held on a $1 million bail.

Intervention by a Young Latino Family

The driver broke free from the assault and fled the restroom. He flagged down a young Latino family, told them he had been stabbed, and pointed toward the attacker.

The family provided towels as blood seeped from his wounds. They then followed the suspect’s truck, helping authorities locate the assailant. Despite his injuries, the driver managed to call 911, place the phone on speaker, and then collapse.

Motive Unclear as Safety Concerns Rise

Jeff Sheaman, a public information officer for the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, stated to reporters that a motive for the attack remains unknown.

Despite significant trauma, the victim has expressed a desire to return to trucking, citing a clean driving record with zero violations. Community advocates noted that the driver was wearing a visible Sikh religious bracelet during the incident, which has heightened safety concerns within the Sikh and South Asian American communities on interstate transport routes.
