Saharan Dust to Bring ‘Blood Rain’ to Britain
A significant plume of dust from the Sahara Desert is expected to reach the United Kingdom this week, potentially causing a phenomenon known as “blood rain.” The dust cloud, carried by Storm Regina, will not only redden the appearance of cars and pavements but too contribute to vibrant sunsets as warmer weather arrives.
What is ‘Blood Rain’?
“Blood rain” occurs when high concentrations of red-colored particles, primarily sand and dust rich in iron oxides, mix with water droplets in clouds. When rainfall occurs even as these particles are present, the raindrops can take on a reddish tint. While dust-laden rain isn’t uncommon in the UK, the current concentration of dust is expected to be noticeable.
Where Will Be Affected?
The Met Office anticipates the dust will primarily affect southern areas of the UK, as dust concentrations will be highest there. While the southwest of England is most likely to experience the phenomenon, areas such as Lancashire could also be impacted, though to a lesser extent.
What to Expect
Rather than a dramatic red downpour, most people will likely notice a thin film of dust settling on surfaces like cars, windows, and outdoor furniture after the rain. This residue will be the clearest indication that the rainfall was dust-laden. The dust is expected to settle by Wednesday and Thursday, coinciding with a moist south-westerly wind.

Saharan dust, also known as African dust, yellow dust, or yellow sand, originates from the Sahara Desert, the largest hot desert in the world. The Sahara produces approximately 400-700 million tons of dust annually, nearly half of all aeolian desert inputs to the ocean. This dust is naturally produced by wind storms and is not significantly influenced by human activity.

Saharan dust plays a vital role in marine ecosystems. It delivers iron, a crucial micronutrient for marine bacteria and phytoplankton, to the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Even with a relatively low percentage of dissolvable iron, the sheer volume of dust transported makes it a significant iron source for these regions.
