Saint Francis’ Relics to Be Displayed in Assisi for 800th Anniversary of His Death

Assisi, Italy – In a historic event, the remains of Saint Francis of Assisi will be publicly displayed for veneration from February 22 to March 22, 2026, at the Basilica of Saint Francis. This unprecedented occasion marks the 800th anniversary of his death and offers a unique opportunity for pilgrims and the faithful to connect with the legacy of the beloved saint.

A Historic Display

For the first time, the relics of Saint Francis will be accessible to the public in the lower church of the Basilica. The event is timed to coincide with the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis’s death, a milestone commemorated under the theme “San Francesco Vive” (Saint Francis Lives On). Vatican News reports that the display goes beyond simple devotion, representing a powerful spiritual call for the Catholic Church and a tangible encounter with the saint for the faithful.

Accessing the Relics: Booking Information

Access to the Lower Church to view the relics requires a free, mandatory booking due to anticipated high demand and for organizational and security reasons. San Francesco Vive offers two veneration options:

• Option A: Accompanied by a Friar – A guided experience with a friar who will lead visitors to the urn containing the remains and conclude with a moment of prayer. Available Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with language options available at the time of booking.
• Option B: Self-Guided – Visitors can follow the path to the relics and join the flow of pilgrims for a personal moment of veneration. Available Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The display of Saint Francis’ relics is seen as a renewal of the bond between history, faith, and community, relaunching his message of peace, fraternity, and simplicity. Fr. Giulio Cesareo, director of the Communications Office of the Sacred Convent of Assisi, emphasized the importance of this event in a time marked by uncertainty and a search for meaning.

Organizers anticipate between 15,000 and 18,000 visitors daily, totaling approximately 370,000 pilgrims during the month-long exposition.
