Salud Jalisco reported 230 confirmed cases of the Coxsackie virus across 12 schools in the state, with the majority of infections concentrated in Guadalajara and Zapopan, according to multiple sources. The Secretaría de Salud Jalisco noted that three schools currently have active cases, while the remaining infections were identified over the past three and a half months. The virus, which causes the “boca, mano y pie” syndrome, typically presents with mild symptoms, including mouth, hand, and foot lesions, and resolves within five days, as stated by Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, the state’s health secretary. The increase of 80 cases in a single day, bringing the total to 230, was reported by the Secretaría de Salud Jalisco. In 2026, the state had recorded around 120 cases of the virus, according to the health secretary.

The health secretary emphasized that the virus spreads less intensely than measles, with one infected child potentially transmitting it to only one other person. Transmission occurs through direct contact with bodily secretions or skin lesions, prompting recommendations for students with active sores to remain at home until symptoms subside. “Se trata de una enfermedad muy leve,” Pérez Gómez said, adding that the virus does not spread before symptoms appear, which allows for targeted isolation measures. Transmission can also occur via respiratory routes, though the primary mode remains direct contact.

Cases Confined to Specific Schools

A school in the Oblatos neighborhood of Guadalajara reported around six affected children, according to the Secretaría de Salud.

Guidelines for Schools and Families

Pérez Gómez advised families to keep children with active lesions at home and seek medical attention to prevent classroom outbreaks. The health department also reiterated that prolonged schoolwide isolation is unnecessary, as the virus does not spread before symptoms appear. The department is monitoring the situation alongside efforts to control influenza and other winter respiratory illnesses in schools. Children with active lesions may remain at home for one or two days, after which they can safely return to school, according to the health secretary. The department recommended reinforcing handwashing and hygiene practices among students to curb transmission. “Habitualmente genera úlceras en la boca, en las palmas, en las plantas,” Pérez Gómez said, describing the typical symptoms of the syndrome.
