Salvatore Ligios’s photographic exhibition “Landscapes and Visions” opened at Galleria Surrau in Arzachena, presenting a dual exploration of the Sardinian territory through contrasting eras and mediums. According to the Su Palatu Fotografia association, the public exhibition runs until September 6, bringing together 30 black-and-white prints from the late 1990s and 22 color prints captured using an iPhone 4.

The collection spans two distinct sections that differ in medium, format, and approach while converging on a unified study of Sardinia’s historical evolution and intimate dimensions. According to curator Ivo Serafino Fenu, Salvatore Ligios approaches the landscape not merely as a natural view, but as a cultural construction, an aesthetic experience, and an ethical responsibility. Fenu noted in the exhibition introduction that this vision transcends the conventional and picturesque clichés often associated with the region, framing the landscape through an epic and deliberate stance.
Background of Salvatore Ligios and Collaborators
Born in Villanova Monteleone in 1949, Salvatore Ligios has a history in Italian arts and publishing. He co-founded Soter Editrice, a publisher focusing on horses, poetry, art, and photography. Ligios directed the Su Palatu cultural center dedicated to photography from 2000 to 2008 and later served as president of the Su Palatu Fotografia cultural association starting in 2011. He taught photography at the Mario Sironi Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari between 2008 and 2015 and co-curated the “Menotrentuno” international festival of young European photography in Sardinia alongside Sonia Borsato from 2006 to 2016.
Curator Ivo Serafino Fenu is an art historian and critic born in San Vero Milis. According to his academic background, Fenu earned a degree in Literature with a specialization in contemporary art from the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy in Cagliari under Salvatore Naitza in 1987. He further specialized in Medieval and Modern Art History at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” Graduate School under Corrado Maltese in 1992, subsequently teaching art history at the “Carlo Contini” Art School and the “De Castro” Classical High School in Oristano.
Exhibition Details and Catalogue Release
The exhibition at Galleria Surrau is promoted by the Su Palatu Fotografia association in collaboration with Vigne Surrau and is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. During the run of the exhibition, a catalog published by Soter Editrice is scheduled for presentation to the public at a to-be-determined date. The publication is printed in a numbered edition of 100 copies signed by the artist.
