Sammons Financial Group announced the launch of Criterion on October 13, 2026, creating a unified wealth advisory holding company that unites three registered investment advisory firms with more than $27 billion in combined assets under management or advisement, Yahoo Finance reported. Headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, the parent identity formalizes a five-year portfolio assembly by the insurance and annuity giant, establishing a permanent capital platform to compete in the independent wealth management market.
The rebrand brings together Beacon Capital Management, NorthRock Partners, and Wealthcare under a single corporate umbrella while allowing each operating entity to retain its individual brand and operational independence, InvestmentNews reported. Criterion president Michael Mock stated that the reorganization marks the beginning of a deliberate growth phase rather than the culmination of past deals. Sammons assembled the trio through targeted transactions, beginning with the 2021 purchase of Beacon Capital Management, adding NorthRock Partners via a strategic partnership in 2023, and completing a June 2025 acquisition of Wealthcare from NewSpring Holdings, according to InvestmentNews.
Distinct Operational Profiles Across Three Member Firms
The three firms operating within the Criterion network serve different segments of the advisory market. NorthRock Partners, headquartered in Minneapolis with national offices including the Bay Area, delivers full-service financial and lifestyle advisory services. Wealthcare, operating out of Philadelphia and Richmond, Virginia, manages roughly $10.1 billion in assets and provides its goals-based GDX360 platform to an affiliated network of independent financial advisors. While the three firms maintain their own individual ADVs and brand identities, Criterion plans to centralize back-office functions across the organizations. Wealth Management reported that the holding company will begin centralized integrations with finance, accounting, capital management, and down-the-line consolidations for email, trading, and portfolio management systems.
Permanent Capital Structure Contrasts with Private Equity Competitors
Criterion differentiates its market positioning by relying on permanent capital tied to Sammons Financial Group, a subsidiary of Sammons Enterprises, which operates as one of the largest privately held, employee-owned companies in the United States, InvestmentNews reported. This structure offers a longer capital horizon than typical private equity-backed aggregators that operate under defined exit timelines. Mock noted that the organization aims to attract independent and hybrid wealth advisors seeking institutional backing without surrendering operational autonomy. The launch arrives amid intense consolidation across the wealth management sector. Insurers are increasingly carving out distinct wealth management identities, mirroring a trend highlighted by the early 2026 debut of Farmers Asset Management as a standalone advisory entity.

Future Acquisition Strategy and Leadership Transitions
Criterion plans to pursue expansion simultaneously through organic technology investments and targeted acquisitions. Wealth Management reported that Mock confirmed the holding company does not intend to acquire a fourth standalone RIA platform, choosing instead to focus its future dealmaking on roll-ups and tuck-ins across Beacon, NorthRock, and Wealthcare.
The corporate launch coincides with broader leadership changes at the parent organization. Wealth Management reported that Sammons President Rob TeKolste is scheduled to become CEO and Chairman of the Board on January 1, 2027, succeeding Esfand Dinshaw, who steps down after a 16-year tenure as CEO and 27 years with the West Des Moines-based insurer.
