Samsung Fast-Tracking Galaxy Z TriFold 2 to Rival iPhone Duo

Samsung is reportedly accelerating its development timeline for the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, positioning the multi-fold device to challenge the upcoming Apple iPhone Duo in the high-end mobile market, according to industry reports. Mobile industry leaker Lanzuk reports that Samsung could release the second-generation tri-folding smartphone in late 2026 or early 2027, moving up from previous schedules that pointed to a late 2027 launch.

Market Pressures and the Apple iPhone Duo Factor

Foldable devices have remained a niche segment within the broader handset market, but manufacturer strategies are shifting as competitors prepare new hardware formats. According to CNET, Samsung’s push to fast-track the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 follows strong early sales figures for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, alongside Apple’s introduction of the iPhone Duo. The iPhone Duo is scheduled for release on October 23 with a starting price of $1,999, according to CNET reporting. With high-end iPhone Duo configurations projected to cost upwards of $3,000, Samsung sees an opportunity to compete directly in the ultra-premium price tier.

Hardware Design and Expected Specifications

Development on the successor to the original TriFold has been underway for months, guided by detailed patent filings that outline potential design modifications. According to CNET, the upcoming Galaxy Z TriFold 2 could feature a wider and shorter form factor compared to its predecessor, alongside a dedicated slot to house an S Pen stylus. Despite rising global hardware production costs, Lanzuk reports that Samsung aims to maintain a pricing structure “nearly identical” to the first model.

The original Galaxy Z TriFold launched in limited markets, including the United States, in January with a starting price of $2,900. Despite the high cost, initial inventory sold out quickly before Samsung discontinued the experimental device three months later. Moving forward with a second-generation model indicates a transition from experimental testing to a permanent product category, though market analysts note that actual consumer demand for the upcoming iPhone Duo will likely influence Samsung’s final manufacturing and release schedules.
