With TSMC’s most advanced production capacity largely booked out, chip designers including AMD, Google, Qualcomm, and Tesla are increasingly turning to Samsung as a viable alternative.

The push toward full capacity follows a period where Samsung was the first foundry to commercialize a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. That timing coincided with an industry-wide surge in demand for artificial intelligence hardware.

Driving Factors Behind the 2-Nanometer Ramp-Up

Samsung’s goal of achieving full line saturation in the second half of 2025 relies on more than just pure 2-nanometer processor production. Demand also centers on AI accelerators and base dies linked to high-bandwidth memory (HBM) modules, which serve critical roles in modern servers and high-performance computing platforms.

This operational rebound marks a shift for Samsung’s foundry business, which previously faced periods of low plant utilization and extended operating losses. The broader adoption of multi-foundry strategies by major chip designers—intended to mitigate supply chain bottlenecks and geopolitical risks—has opened doors that the South Korean manufacturer is now working to capture.

Mature Nodes and Mature Markets Benefit from AI Demand

The manufacturing recovery extends past cutting-edge silicon. Production lines operating below the 8-nanometer threshold are already running at or near peak capacity, while mature nodes see stronger order volumes from automotive and AI-adjacent applications. This diversified demand reduces the foundry division’s reliance on any single product category.

Despite rising factory utilization, Samsung faces ongoing technical hurdles. Yield remains the determining factor for controlling costs, maintaining reliable delivery schedules, and handling high-volume manufacturing.

Market Position and Outlook

Higher utilization rates provide Samsung Foundry with improved revenue visibility and stronger customer confidence as competition in advanced packaging and AI hardware intensifies. While yield optimization remains the critical test for long-term profitability, the current shift in fab utilization points to a stabilization of Samsung’s standing in the advanced semiconductor market.
