Samsung Galaxy S26 Series: Horizon Lock Stabilizes Video, Launches March 11th in Canada

Samsung’s Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra were unveiled, with a surprisingly impactful feature stealing the indicate: Horizon Lock. This software-powered stabilization tool, found within the Super Steady mode of the Samsung Camera app, aims to deliver gimbal-like video stabilization. I recently had the opportunity to test the feature at a hands-on event in Toronto.

A Software-Powered Gimbal

Horizon Lock essentially mimics the hardware leveling of a gimbal, keeping footage stable even when the phone is moved vigorously. While available across the entire S26 range, performance is notably best on the S26 Ultra. The feature relies on an upgraded image signal processor (ISP) and high-megapixel sensors to function effectively.

How Horizon Lock Works

For optimal performance, Horizon Lock requires ample ambient light. The technology leverages the upgraded ISP and high-megapixel sensors to reliably stabilize footage. A higher megapixel count, particularly on the S26 Ultra, provides a larger “canvas” for cropping and stabilizing the video, creating a safety margin for movement. In low-light conditions, the feature may struggle to function or introduce noticeable artifacts and noise.

Performance Across the S26 Range

The S26 Ultra demonstrated the most consistent results, effectively stabilizing footage even during significant movement. The S26+ showed diminished performance, particularly in low-light scenarios, with noticeable artifacts appearing in the output.

In fine lighting conditions, Horizon Lock offers a compelling alternative to purchasing a dedicated $150–$200 phone gimbal, making it particularly appealing for action vloggers, sports content creators, or anyone capturing footage on the go.

Enabling Horizon Lock

To activate Horizon Lock on your new Galaxy S26 series device, open the Camera app, switch to video mode, and tap the four-dot Quick Controls icon. Select the Super Steady stabilization icon, then choose the final icon to enable Super Steady with Horizontal Lock.
