Samsung Galaxy S26 Foregoes Built-In Magnets, Prioritizing Battery and Design

Despite speculation and leaks suggesting the inclusion of magnets in the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, the devices will launch without them. Samsung has opted to prioritize other design elements and features, such as battery capacity and device thinness, over native magnetic compatibility.

Why No Magnets?

The decision stems from Samsung’s research indicating that a vast majority of users—approximately 80-90%—utilize phone cases. With the increasing popularity of magnetic cases, Samsung’s R&D chief, Won-Joon Choi, explained to The Verge that integrating magnets into the phones themselves isn’t the most efficient use of internal space.

“About 80 or 90 percent of people are using a case, and cases with magnets are very popular these days,” Choi stated. Instead, Samsung believes that space is better allocated to components like larger batteries or achieving a slimmer profile.

Magnetic Accessories Still Possible

The absence of built-in magnets doesn’t preclude the use of magnetic accessories with the Galaxy S26 series. Users can still enjoy the benefits of magnetic wireless chargers and power banks by utilizing compatible cases.

Future Considerations

Choi indicated that Samsung remains open to incorporating magnets in future devices if it can be done without compromising other features. The company will continue to evaluate the potential benefits and trade-offs.

The Trade-offs: Design vs. Functionality

While magnetic accessories offer convenience, some argue that excluding them from the base design forces consumers to purchase additional accessories to access this functionality. The preference for case-less phones, though a minority, highlights the potential drawback of this approach.

Samsung’s continued focus on minimizing phone thickness has been questioned, with some suggesting that a slight increase in bulk would be acceptable in exchange for enhanced features and battery life, a sentiment echoed after the performance of the Galaxy S25 Edge.
