Configuring a new Samsung Galaxy Watch requires working through a dense ecosystem of advanced health sensors, customizable faces, and deep software menus. Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra lines can immediately improve battery life, simplify how they move through the interface, and unlock hardware shortcuts by adjusting five foundational device settings.
Watch Face Customization and Battery Optimization
Samsung Galaxy Watches offer thousands of watch face options, including custom photo backgrounds accessed by long-pressing the face gallery and tapping the gear-and-pencil icon. One standout option is the Daily Dashboard face, which shifts background colors throughout the day and supports up to eight Complications that populate automatically as compatible apps are installed.
However, active watch faces, Always-On Display (AOD), and high screen brightness consume substantial battery power. Users can disable AOD by swiping down to open the quick menu and tapping the watch face outline icon until it turns dark or grey. Adaptive brightness can be turned off by going to Settings, selecting Display, and adjusting the brightness level between 25% and 40% alongside enabling raise-to-wake functionality.
Gestures and Hardware Buttons
Physical and touchless controls provide fast alternatives to using menus on small screens. The double-pinch gesture—performed by tapping your thumb and index finger together twice near the watch—answers calls, dismisses alarms, and captures photos. Users can enable this by going to Settings, selecting Buttons and gestures, and locating the gesture list. A wrist-shake gesture similarly rejects calls and returns the user to the main watch face.

Universal Gestures, located within Accessibility settings, allow users to operate most watch functions without touching the screen, though this feature remains disabled when a pattern security lock is active. For tactile control, the physical buttons feature customizable shortcuts:
- Top Button: Double-press opens any app or utility; long-press launches Gemini, Bixby, or the power-off menu; quick press returns to the watch face.
- Center Quick Button: Launches a designated app or exercise via short or double press.
- Lower Button: Short press goes back or opens recent apps; long press opens Samsung Wallet.
Stackable Tiles and App Organization
Samsung’s stackable tiles allow users to combine up to 11 widgets into a single swipeable tile. Configuration takes place through the Galaxy Wearable app on a paired phone, where users can add widgets and preview how the layout will appear on the watch before syncing. The Galaxy Wearable app lets users organize their app launcher in either a grid or list view, featuring a toggle that automatically pushes most-used applications to the top of the list.
