Samsung Galaxy XR Evolves: New Android XR Update Brings Spatial AI and Immersive Features

The landscape of extended reality is shifting from simple headsets to intelligent spatial computers. Samsung and Google are accelerating this transition with a significant update to the Galaxy XR ecosystem. By blending the hardware engineering of Samsung with the software capabilities of Android XR and Gemini AI, the Galaxy XR headset is evolving into a more natural, immersive tool for both productivity and entertainment.

Expanding the XR Ecosystem: The Latest Android XR Update

Starting April 7, 2026, Google and Samsung began rolling out a comprehensive update to Galaxy XR headsets. This update focuses on deepening immersion and making the user interface experience more intuitive through improved tracking and spatial awareness.

Auto-Spatialization: Turning 2D into 3D

One of the most significant additions is auto-spatialization. Currently launching as an experimental feature, this tool allows users to transform 2D content—including websites in Chrome, 2D games, images, and YouTube videos—into immersive 3D experiences with a single button press. Users can activate this feature via the Labs tab under Advanced features in Settings.

Enhanced Environmental Interaction

The update introduces several “fancy new tricks” designed to make the digital layer of the headset blend seamlessly with the physical world:

• Pinned Wall Apps: Users can now anchor apps directly to physical walls. This allows for permanent digital fixtures, such as keeping a calendar next to a desk or dedicating a specific wall section as an entertainment screen.
• Improved Interaction: The update brings enhancements to real-hand interaction, eye tracking, and hand tracking to make the headset feel more natural.
• Session Restore: Better session restore capabilities ensure that users can pick up exactly where they left off in their virtual workspace.

Hardware and Software Synergy

The Galaxy XR headset is engineered by Samsung and powered by Android XR. The hardware is designed to be lightweight yet powerful, featuring a 4K micro-OLED display and an external battery to maintain a comfortable form factor during extended use.

Integration with Gemini provides a conversational AI layer that assists users as they navigate between physical and digital worlds. To help new users get started, Samsung offers the Explorer Pack 2, a bundle of subscriptions and apps designed to showcase the intersection of AI and XR.

A Growing Library of Immersive Content

Since the launch of the Galaxy XR late last year, the library of immersive experiences has expanded significantly. There are now over 100 apps specifically built to take full advantage of XR’s capabilities—more than double the amount available at launch. Notable experiences include:

• Real VR Fishing: A fully immersive sporting experience.
• PSG Immersion: An app that allows fans to watch Paris St. Germain games as if they were present at the Parc des Princes stadium, offering both full immersive mode and tabletop overhead views.
