Samsung’s QD-OLED Penta Tandem: A New Era for Display Technology
Samsung Display is pushing the boundaries of OLED technology with its new ‘QD-OLED Penta Tandem’ panels, a direct response to LG Display’s Tandem WOLED offerings. This advancement, featuring a five-layer organic light-emitting structure, promises significant improvements in brightness, efficiency, and lifespan for both TVs and monitors.
What is QD-OLED Penta Tandem?
QD-OLED Penta Tandem utilizes five stacked layers of blue/green OLED materials operating in tandem – an increase from the previous four-layer structure. This “penta” configuration (Greek for five) is combined with quantum dots to convert blue light into red and green, creating a wider color gamut and enhanced picture quality. The technology builds upon Samsung’s existing QD-OLED panels, which already compete with LG’s WOLED in the TV and monitor market.
How Does it Compare to LG’s Tandem WOLED?
LG Display introduced its Tandem WOLED technology in December 2025, employing a four-layer structure. Both approaches – Samsung’s Penta Tandem and LG’s Tandem WOLED – aim to improve display performance by stacking multiple OLED layers. However, Samsung’s implementation utilizes a quantum dot layer for color production, while LG’s relies on a white base layer with color filters.
Performance Improvements and Specifications
Samsung Display claims that QD-OLED Penta Tandem offers several key advantages:
- Increased Brightness: Panels can achieve peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits for TVs and 1,300 nits for monitors.
- Extended Lifespan: The five-layer structure is projected to double the lifespan of the panels compared to previous generations.
- Improved Efficiency: A 1.3x higher luminous efficiency means brighter images with reduced power consumption.
Monitors featuring QD-OLED Penta Tandem are the first to achieve DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, requiring a black level of 0.0005 nits and 500 nits of white on 10% of the surface.
Availability and Applications
QD-OLED Penta Tandem panels are already in production and were featured in products showcased at CES 2026. The technology is being implemented in a range of panel sizes, including:
- 27-inch and 31.5-inch 4K monitors (3840 x 2160)
- 34-inch WQHD monitors (3440 x 1440)
- 49-inch 5120×1440 resolution panels
- 55, 65, and 77-inch TV panels
Samsung Display is supplying these panels to major manufacturers such as Asus, Dell, Gigabyte, MSI, Sony, and Samsung Electronics. While not all brands may explicitly advertise their products as featuring QD-OLED Penta Tandem, the technology is expected to be prevalent in flagship models throughout 2026.
