SmartThings and IKEA Enhance Smart Home Integration with Matter
Samsung’s SmartThings platform has deepened its integration with IKEA’s smart home devices, leveraging the Matter standard to simplify setup and expand compatibility. This collaboration aims to make smart home technology more accessible and user-friendly, eliminating previous complexities associated with connecting devices from different manufacturers.
Seamless Connectivity Through Matter
As of April 21, 2026, SmartThings now offers enhanced integration with twenty-five IKEA smart home devices that support Matter-over-Thread. Samsung announced this expanded compatibility, which includes smart bulbs, plugs, scroll wheel remotes, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, motion sensors, door sensors, and water leak sensors. Previously, connecting IKEA devices to SmartThings required both an IKEA smart home hub and a SmartThings hub. Now, these devices can connect directly to a SmartThings hub, streamlining the process for users.
Benefits for Latest and Experienced Smart Home Users
The integration of Matter simplifies the smart home experience for both beginners and experienced users. SmartThings highlights that this rollout represents one of the most expansive and approachable Matter-over-Thread implementations to date. For those new to smart home technology, IKEA’s affordable pricing and user-friendly design provide an effortless entry point. Existing SmartThings users benefit from the simplified setup and increased compatibility with a wider range of devices.

Expanding the Smart Home Ecosystem
The integration extends beyond basic device control. SmartThings users can now connect IKEA devices with Samsung appliances, including TVs, air conditioners, and washing machines, as well as a broad range of third-party devices and protocols already supported by the platform. This interconnectedness allows for more complex automations and personalized experiences.
Leverage Cases: Enhanced Convenience and Care
The combined functionality offers practical applications for everyday life. For example, a user can connect an IKEA door sensor to SmartThings to monitor the activity of loved ones, receiving notifications when a door is opened or closed. Samsung illustrates this with the “SmartThings Family Care” feature, enabling remote monitoring of family members. IKEA’s air quality and temperature/humidity sensors can trigger automated adjustments to smart blinds, optimizing energy efficiency and indoor comfort.
Technical Details and Updates
The IKEA Dirigera hub, with firmware version 2.934.1 (or later), is key to this enhanced integration. Matter Alpha notes that updating the Dirigera is crucial for optimal performance, particularly for onboarding new devices. The 2.934.0 update introduced improved onboarding processes, and the Dirigera also functions as a Thread Border Router, supporting the Thread mesh networking protocol.
Looking Ahead
The collaboration between SmartThings and IKEA signifies a continued push towards a more unified and accessible smart home experience. As Matter gains wider adoption, consumers can expect even greater interoperability between devices from different manufacturers, simplifying setup and enhancing the overall value of smart home technology.
