Samsung Electronics is building an artificial intelligence-powered wearable called Intelligent Eyewear. The tech giant intends the hardware to function as an extension of smartphone capabilities rather than a standalone replacement.
London Briefing Details Everyday Vision
Jae-in Choi, executive vice president and head of the XR Development Team at Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, wants a product designed for everyday wear instead of a tech-heavy novelty.
Samsung revealed the new device during a product briefing in London on the 23rd. Choi stated that the development team focused on creating a natural and comfortable fit that aligns with personal style and identity.
Titanium Frames and Ergonomic Weight Balancing
The build utilizes ultra-slim hinge structures, ultra-thin injection molding, and lightweight titanium and aluminum materials. The hardware integrates cameras, sensors, microphones, and speakers. These components monitor the user’s field of view and surroundings without requiring them to pull out a smartphone.
Samsung applies internal component optimization alongside ergonomic weight balancing around the forehead, cheekbones, and ears.
Rigorous Cosmetic and Sweat Testing
To address the physical wear unique to face-worn accessories, Samsung established more than 20 new testing procedures tailored to the eyewear form factor. Choi noted that the company evaluated the hardware against standard smartphone durability metrics as well as high-temperature and high-humidity environments.
Tests also cover exposure to sunscreen and repetitive hinge movements. These measures account for daily exposure to sweat and cosmetic products that traditional mobile devices rarely encounter.
Split Computing via Google Gemini Live
The Intelligent Eyewear runs on Google’s Gemini Live. This software allows the system to interpret local environments and support conversational interactions.
The device connects directly with Galaxy smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds to manage calls, notifications, music playback, and captured media. To maintain a lightweight chassis, Samsung utilizes a “split computing” architecture. Instead of packing heavy processing power and memory into the frames, the device offloads intensive calculations to a paired smartphone.
Active LED Safeguards and Premium Focus
Privacy safeguards include an active LED indicator light that signals when recording is underway, a wear-detection sensor, and a feature that detects if the indicator LED is covered. Samsung stated that audio and video data collected by the device will not be used to train AI models.
Leadership did not disclose specific sales targets, pricing tiers, or precise market share projections during the London briefing. However, Choi indicated that the hardware is positioned for the premium segment. Samsung views its emphasis on daily comfort as a distinct structural differentiator against established competitors like Meta’s AI glasses.
